The console powers on, the light comes on, the fan spins, and the TV says no signal. It is one of the most common faults we see in Manchester, and in most cases the diagnosis is simple: a damaged HDMI port.

Why HDMI ports fail

The HDMI socket on a PS5 or Xbox is soldered directly to the main board, and it takes a beating: cables yanked out sideways, consoles pulled off the shelf by the lead, house moves, and the slow wear of thousands of insertions. The pins inside the port are fine and easily bent. Once a few are out of shape, the handshake with your TV fails and you get a black screen.

Why it is a board-level repair

Replacing the port is not a screwdriver job. The old socket has to be desoldered from the board and a new one fitted with hot air and microsoldering equipment, without disturbing the components sitting millimetres away. Done properly, the new port is as strong as factory. Done badly, the console is scrap, which is why we would rather you did not attempt the £8 eBay kit.
