September is upgrade season. A new iPhone has just landed, the trade-in emails are arriving, and the crack across your screen suddenly feels like a sign. Before you spend several hundred pounds, it is worth spending five minutes on the question properly — because for most people in Manchester, the repair still wins.

Do the maths most people skip

The honest comparison is not “repair cost versus new phone price”. It is repair cost versus the gap between what your current phone is worth and what the new one actually costs you after trade-in, over the months you intend to keep it.

And a MacBook that is slow or won’t hold charge is very often a battery or a storage job rather than a write-off.

When replacing genuinely makes more sense

Replacement usually makes more sense when a device has several unrelated faults at once — a cracked screen and a failing battery and a dead speaker — because the combined cost starts to approach real-world market value. It also makes sense when the phone no longer receives security updates, or when it is genuinely too slow for what you need it to do day to day.

The option nobody mentions: repair now, upgrade later

Repairing is not a vote against ever upgrading. It is a way of upgrading on your own timetable instead of the manufacturer’s. Fix the fault for a fraction of the cost, use the phone for another six or twelve months, and buy the new model when prices settle after launch or when your contract genuinely ends. You keep the choice; you just stop paying a premium for the panic.

It also keeps a working device out of a drawer. Greater Manchester throws away a remarkable amount of perfectly repairable electronics every year, and the greenest phone is nearly always the one already in your pocket.
