Signs You Have This Problem

Liquid damage is a race against corrosion. These are the signs, and speed genuinely matters.

Screen misted, blotchy or showing lines

Moisture has reached behind the display. The screen may work now and fail days later as corrosion spreads.

Muffled or crackling speaker

Water trapped in the speaker mesh distorts sound. Sometimes it clears, often it does not.

Charging refused or a liquid warning

Modern phones detect moisture in the port and block charging to protect the board. That warning is protecting your phone, so do not override it.

Works fine, then dies days later

This is the classic pattern. Corrosion keeps eating the board after the phone dries, which is why a phone that seems fine still needs cleaning.

What Causes It

The water itself is not what kills a phone. The damage comes from what is dissolved in it. Tap water, seawater, coffee and beer all leave conductive salts and sugars behind on the circuit board as they evaporate, and those deposits create tiny short circuits and eat through solder joints over the following days and weeks. That is why a phone can survive the dunking and then fail a fortnight later, and it is also why rice does nothing useful. Rice absorbs a little ambient moisture but cannot touch the residue that is already inside the phone doing the damage.

How We Fix It

Assessment is £25 and includes a full ultrasonic clean where the phone is a candidate for it. If we cannot bring it back, No Fix No Fee means you pay nothing beyond that.

The single most useful thing you can do is switch it off and leave it off, then get it to us. We open the phone, disconnect the battery to stop current flowing across wet circuitry, and clean the board properly, usually ultrasonically, to lift the corrosive residue rather than just drying it. We then test the phone section by section and tell you honestly what has survived and what has not. Some phones come back perfectly. Some have specific failed components we can replace. A few are beyond economic repair, and we will say so plainly rather than spending your money on a lost cause. In every case we can attempt data recovery first if your photos matter most.

Water Damage Repair FAQs

Should I put it in rice?
No. Rice is a myth that costs people their phones. It cannot remove the corrosive residue inside, and the delay while you try it is time corrosion is spreading. Switch the phone off and get it to us.
My phone is water resistant. Am I safe?
Water resistance ratings are tested when the phone is brand new and sealed. Adhesive ages, seals degrade after drops and previous repairs, and the ratings do not cover soapy water, salt water or pressure. Plenty of rated phones come to us with liquid damage.
Can you get my photos back?
Often yes, even when the phone will not power on. Tell us data recovery is the priority when you book and we will approach the job that way.
It fell in and still works. Do I need anything done?
Ideally yes. A clean now is far cheaper than a board repair in three weeks, and the delayed-failure pattern is extremely common with liquid damage.
