Dropped Your Phone in Water? The First 10 Minutes Matter

Water damage is the one phone fault where what you do in the first ten minutes decides whether it’s a £60 clean-up or a lost phone. Most of the advice you’ll find online — rice, hairdryers, “leave it a week” — makes the outcome worse. Here is what actually happens inside the phone and what to do about it, from a team that has recovered thousands of wet phones over 15 years.

What’s really going on inside

Water itself doesn’t kill a phone instantly. Two things do: short circuits while it’s powered on and wet, and corrosion, which starts within hours as minerals in the water eat the copper tracks and component legs on the logic board. Sea water and drinks (sugar, acids) corrode fastest; clean tap water slowest. That’s why “it worked for two days and then died” is so common — the corrosion caught up.

The first ten minutes — do this

1. Get it out and switch it off immediately. If it’s already off, leave it off. Power flowing through wet circuits is what causes the permanent damage. Don’t press buttons to “check if it works”.
2. Remove the case, SIM tray and anything plugged in. Water hides under cases and in the SIM slot.
3. Wipe the outside and shake water out of the ports — port facing down, gentle shakes. Don’t blow into it.
4. Keep it off and get it to a repairer the same day if you can. An internal clean within 24 hours has a very high success rate. After a week, it drops sharply.

What NOT to do (the myths)

• Rice. It doesn’t draw water out of a sealed phone, it does nothing about corrosion, and rice dust gets in the port. It only “works” because people leave the phone off for two days — which is the part that helped.
• Hairdryers, radiators, ovens, airing cupboards. Heat drives moisture deeper and can warp the screen and battery. A warm, dry room is the maximum.
• Plugging it in to “see if it charges”. This is the single most damaging thing you can do — it’s how a recoverable phone becomes unrecoverable.
• Waiting to see. Corrosion doesn’t wait. The phone that “seems fine” is often already deteriorating.

“But my phone is waterproof”

It’s water-resistant, and only when new. IP68 ratings are tested with fresh water, on a new seal, at rest. Two years of drops, heat cycles and a previous screen repair (which replaces the factory seal) reduce that protection significantly. Salt water, pool chemicals and hot drinks are outside the rating entirely. Apple and Samsung both exclude liquid damage from warranty for exactly this reason.

What a professional water damage treatment involves

Not a dry-out — a clean. We open the phone, disconnect the battery to stop any current, and inspect the board under magnification. Corrosion is removed with an ultrasonic bath in specialist cleaning solution, the board is dried properly, and every connector and component is checked. Then we test: power, charging, display, cameras, speakers, microphones, Face ID. Common casualties — screen, battery, charging port — are quoted separately if they’ve failed. If the phone can’t be saved, there’s no fee for the diagnostic, and we can usually still recover your data.

Realistic success rates

• Clean water, switched off quickly, seen within 24 hours: excellent odds — most come back fully working.
• Sea water or sugary drinks, or the phone was left on: lower, but still worth it — often the board survives and only a part needs replacing.
• Left for a week in rice, then charged: this is the group with the worst outcomes. Bring it in anyway; data recovery is often still possible.
