Dropped Your Phone in Water? The First 30 Minutes

Sink, toilet, canal, pint: however it happened, your phone is wet and the clock is running. What you do in the next half hour has more effect on survival than anything a technician does later. Here is the drill.

Do these five things immediately

Get it out and switch it off completely, do not just let the screen sleep. Take the case off and the SIM tray out. Dab it dry with whatever is to hand, holding the ports downward so gravity helps. Keep it upright, not flat. Then get it to a repair bench as fast as you can, because everything from here is about time.

Do not do these, whatever the internet says

Do not charge it to see if it works: powering wet electronics is how boards die. Do not put it in rice, which does nothing but add starch dust to your problems. Do not use a hairdryer, which drives moisture deeper and cooks components. Do not shake it violently, which spreads water to dry areas.

Why speed beats everything

Water rarely kills a phone instantly; corrosion does, over the following days. Minerals in the water attack the board while the phone sits in a drawer appearing to work. A phone opened, cleaned and treated within a day has an excellent chance; the same phone after a fortnight of it seemed fine often does not.
