Phone Charging Problems: Port, Cable or Battery?

A phone that will not charge feels terminal, but the cause is nearly always one of three things, and two of them are cheap. Here is how to narrow it down before you spend anything.

First, rule out the cable and plug

Try a different cable and a different wall adapter, not the frayed one from the car. Cables fail internally with no visible damage, and they are the culprit in a surprising share of no-charge phones. If a borrowed cable charges the phone, you have solved it for the price of a lead.

Second, look in the port
