How to Back Up Your Phone Before Any Repair

Reputable repairs do not touch your data: a screen or battery swap leaves your photos exactly where they were. But any time a device is opened there is a small chance of the unexpected, so ten minutes of backup before a repair buys total peace of mind. Here is the quick version for both platforms.

iPhone: iCloud or a computer

The easy route: Settings, your name, iCloud, iCloud Backup, Back Up Now, on Wi-Fi and charge. If your free 5GB is full, either a month of iCloud+ for the occasion or the computer route: plug into a Mac (Finder) or PC (iTunes/Apple Devices app) and choose Back Up Now, ideally with Encrypt Local Backup ticked so health data and saved passwords come too.

Android: Google One plus your gallery

Settings, Google, Backup, then Back Up Now covers apps, settings and texts. Check Google Photos is actually syncing, open it and look for the tick on recent shots, because a backup that has silently paused is the classic gotcha. Samsung owners can add a Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch backup for belt and braces.

The two things people forget

WhatsApp has its own backup: Settings, Chats, Chat Backup, run it manually before handing the phone over. And two-factor authentication apps: make sure your recovery codes are stored somewhere that is not the phone being repaired, or transfer the authenticator first.
