Why consoles cook themselves

A PS5 or Xbox pulls air through itself for hours at a time, and with the air comes dust, carpet fibre and pet hair. Over a couple of years the heatsink fins clog into felt. At the same time, the thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink dries out and stops transferring heat. The console responds the only way it can: spinning the fan harder, throttling performance, and eventually shutting down to protect itself.

The warning signs

Loud fan noise on menus that used to be silent, hot air from the vents, frame drops in games that used to run smoothly, and sudden shutdowns during big scenes. On PS5s past a certain age, the liquid metal compound can also migrate, which is a job for proper equipment, not a living room teardown.

Why not just compressed air?

A blast through the vents moves surface dust around but cannot reach the clogged heatsink core, and it does nothing about dried paste. It is the equivalent of dusting the bonnet when the radiator is blocked.
