Phone Not Charging? 7 Causes and How to Fix Each One

A phone that won’t charge feels like an emergency, but the cause is usually one of seven things — and three of them you can fix at home in five minutes. Work through this list in order before you assume the worst.

1. The cable or plug (the cause 40% of the time)

Cables fail silently, especially near the connector where they bend. Try a different cable and a different plug — ideally an official one or a reputable brand. Cheap petrol-station cables are the single biggest cause of “not charging” we see in Manchester, and also the biggest cause of damaged charging ports, because they’re built to looser tolerances.

2. Lint in the charging port (the cause we fix most often)

Pocket fluff packs into the port every time you plug in, until the cable can’t seat fully. Symptoms: the cable feels loose, charges only when pushed at an angle, or the phone charges intermittently. Do not use a metal pin or paperclip — you’ll bridge the contacts or bend the tongue inside the port and turn a free fix into a paid one. A wooden toothpick or a soft plastic pick, gently, with a torch, is the safe way. If you’re not comfortable, we clean ports free of charge while you wait.

3. “Liquid Detected” or “Charging Not Available” warnings

Modern iPhones and Samsungs refuse to charge if the port sensors read moisture. Sometimes it’s real (rain, gym bag), sometimes it’s residue on the sensor after the phone got damp weeks ago. Leave the phone in a dry room, port facing down, for a few hours — don’t blow into it or use a hairdryer. If the warning persists for more than a day with no moisture, the sensor or port needs cleaning or replacing.

4. A worn-out battery

If the phone charges to 100% but drops fast, dies at 30%, or shuts down in the cold, the battery is the problem — not the charger. On iPhone, check Settings → Battery → Battery Health: below 80% maximum capacity means it’s time. 5. A software glitch

Occasionally the phone is charging but the display isn’t updating. Force restart it (Volume Up, Volume Down, then hold the Side button on iPhone 8 and newer; hold Volume Down + Power on most Samsungs) while it’s plugged in. If it springs back to life, it was software. Also check you’re not on an outdated iOS/Android version that has a known charging bug.

6. The charging port itself has failed

Ports wear out. After thousands of insertions, or one yank of the cable, the internal contacts stop making a reliable connection. Symptoms: nothing happens with several known-good cables, or the phone only charges wirelessly. On iPhone the port is on a flex assembly with the microphone and speaker grille — a proper replacement restores all three. Same-day repair in most cases.

7. A charging IC or board fault

The rarest cause: the chip that manages charging (the Tristar/Hydra IC on older iPhones, or the PMIC) fails — often after using a poor-quality car charger or cable. Symptoms: the phone won’t charge or only charges slowly with the “accessory not supported” message on every cable. This is a microsoldering repair, not a port swap. Quick decision guide

• Charges with a different cable? — Buy a decent cable. Done.
• Charges only at an angle or when pushed? — Lint or a worn port. Cleaning first, port replacement if needed.
• Charges fully but dies quickly? — Battery.
• Liquid warning with no liquid? — Port/sensor cleaning.
• Nothing with any cable, and no wireless charging? — Port or board. Bring it in for a free diagnostic.

Prevent it next time

• Use branded or MFi-certified cables. It’s the cheapest insurance your phone can have.
• Unplug by the connector, not the cable.
• Clear the port with a toothpick every couple of months if you carry your phone in a pocket.
• Avoid charging in the bathroom or with a damp case — that’s how “liquid detected” starts.
