iPhone Screen Black But Phone Still Works? Causes and Fixes

Your iPhone is vibrating, ringing, even playing sounds — but the screen is black. It’s one of the most common faults we see in Manchester, and the good news is that in most cases the phone underneath is fine. Here’s how to tell what’s actually wrong, what you can safely try yourself, and when it’s a 30-minute repair.

First: is it the screen or the phone?

A quick test separates the two. Ask Siri something, or call the phone from another number. If it responds — sound, vibration, Siri talking back — the phone is on and working. The problem is the display or the connection to it. If there’s total silence and no vibration, skip to “when it’s not the screen” below.

Try this before anything else: a force restart

A black screen is sometimes a software freeze, not hardware. A force restart won’t erase anything:

• iPhone 8 and newer (including all Face ID models): press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears (up to 20 seconds).
• iPhone 7 / 7 Plus: hold Volume Down and the Side button together until the logo appears.
• iPhone 6s / SE (1st gen) and older: hold Home and the Top/Side button together.

If the logo appears and the phone boots normally, it was a freeze. If you see the logo and then black again, or nothing at all, read on.

The five real causes of a black-but-working iPhone

1. The display cable has come loose (common after a drop)

The screen connects to the logic board by small ribbon cables. A knock — even one that didn’t crack the glass — can unseat one. Symptoms: phone works, screen black, sometimes flickers back if you press the top corner. This is a quick fix: we reseat the connector, test, and if the cable is damaged, replace the screen assembly. Usually done while you wait.

2. The OLED panel has failed

On iPhone X and newer, the screen is OLED. Drops can kill the panel without cracking the glass — you might see a green or pink tint first, then vertical lines, then black. The phone is fine; the screen needs replacing. 3. Backlight failure (iPhone 8, SE, 11 and XR — the LCD models)

On LCD iPhones the image is there but the backlight isn’t. Shine a torch at the screen at an angle: if you can faintly see icons, the backlight circuit has failed. Sometimes that’s the screen, sometimes a component on the board. We diagnose which for free.

4. Liquid got in

Rain, a sink splash, a steamy bathroom — moisture on the display connector corrodes it within days. If the phone has been near water recently, don’t keep powering it on. 5. A board-level fault

Rarer, but a failed display IC or power circuit on the logic board can black the screen while everything else works. This needs microsoldering rather than a screen swap. We’ll tell you honestly if that’s what it is, and quote before doing anything.

What NOT to do

• Don’t keep force-restarting it over and over — if it’s hardware, you’re just draining the battery.
• Don’t press hard on the screen to “reconnect” it — you can crack an OLED that was otherwise intact.
• Don’t put it in rice if it’s been wet. Rice does nothing for the corrosion happening on the board.
• Don’t attempt a DIY screen replacement on Face ID models unless you’re confident — damage the earpiece flex and you can lose Face ID permanently.

When it’s NOT the screen

If the phone is completely dead — no sound, no vibration, no response to a charger for 30 minutes — it’s a power problem: a flat and failed battery, a dead charging port, or a board fault. Plug it into a known-good charger for half an hour and try the force restart again. If nothing, it needs diagnosis. Our Manchester diagnostic is free and there’s no fee if we can’t fix it.
