MacBook Battery Swollen or Draining? Manchester Guide
September 4, 2026 · Manchester Phone RepairsA MacBook that used to last all day and now dies by lunchtime is annoying. A MacBook with a battery quietly pushing the case apart is something else entirely. Both problems start in the same place, and both are fixable — the trick is knowing which one you are dealing with before it gets worse.
How to Tell Your MacBook Battery Is Actually Failing
macOS keeps a running count of how many times the battery has been charged. Hold Option and click the Apple menu, choose System Information, then Power — you will see the cycle count and a condition reading. Most modern MacBooks are rated for around 1,000 cycles, and once you are past that, capacity drops noticeably. If macOS is showing “Service Recommended” or “Replace Soon”, that is the machine telling you the cells are worn, not that the laptop is broken.
Real-world signs matter just as much. A battery on the way out will fall from 40% to a shutdown in minutes, run hot during light work like email or Safari, or refuse to charge past a certain percentage. Sudden shutdowns the moment you unplug are the clearest signal of all. None of this means your MacBook is finished — a healthy MacBook with a tired battery is still a good machine.
Why a Swollen Battery Is a Different Problem Entirely
Swelling is not ordinary wear and tear. It happens when a lithium-ion cell degrades and produces gas inside its sealed pouch, and that pressure has nowhere to go except outward. On a MacBook the battery sits directly beneath the trackpad, so the first symptom is usually a trackpad that clicks oddly, feels raised, or stops clicking altogether. Later signs include a lid that no longer sits flush, a case that rocks on the desk, or a visible gap along the bottom edge.
Treat a swollen battery as urgent. The pressure can crack the trackpad, bow the keyboard deck and, in bad cases, push against the display. A damaged lithium cell is also a genuine fire risk, which is why airlines and couriers take them so seriously. If you can see or feel swelling, stop charging the machine, shut it down, and do not leave it plugged in overnight.
What to Do Right Now
Back up first if you safely can — Time Machine to an external drive, or iCloud and Google Drive for anything critical. A battery replacement should not touch your data, but backing up before any repair is simply good practice.
Then take the load off the battery. Unplug the charger once the machine is powered down. Do not press or squeeze a swollen case to test it, do not try to prise the laptop open, and never puncture a battery pouch. If the MacBook is your work machine and you need it running until a repair slot, keep it on mains power, on a hard surface rather than a bed or sofa, and keep an eye on how hot it gets.
What a MacBook Battery Replacement Involves
On most models the bottom case comes off, the old cell is released from its adhesive, and a new battery is fitted and calibrated. On modern Retina models the battery is bonded to the top case, so it is a careful job rather than a quick swap. Done properly it takes time; done in a hurry it damages trackpad cables and the keyboard deck. That is exactly why we quote per model after diagnosis rather than throwing out a single headline price.
Every MacBook repair we do comes with a 15-month warranty and our no fix, no fee promise, and we will always tell you honestly if a machine is not worth the money. A MacBook Air with a worn battery and a good screen is usually well worth reviving. A much older machine with a swollen battery, a failing drive and a cracked hinge often is not — and we would rather say so than take the job.
