Freshers 2026: Get Your Devices Manchester-Ready
August 22, 2026 · Manchester Phone RepairsTerm starts in a few weeks and your phone and laptop are about to work harder than they have all year — lecture recordings, group chats, late-night essays and a commute that eats battery. Half an hour of prep before you arrive in Manchester saves the week-three panic. Here is what is actually worth doing.
Check your battery health before you pack
Batteries rarely die suddenly. They fade quietly for months, then fail on the worst possible day. On an iPhone, open Settings › Battery › Battery Health & Charging and look at Maximum Capacity — anything below 80% means you are living on borrowed time. On Android, a full charge that does not survive until dinner tells you the same story. A battery replacement starts at £29, which is one of the cheapest repairs there is, and it is far better done in August than during your first assessment week.
The same logic applies to laptops. If your MacBook already shows “Service Recommended” in the battery menu, or the case has started to bow very slightly, deal with it before you move. A swollen battery is a genuine safety issue and a warm halls room does it no favours.
Clear your storage, then back everything up
A device sitting at 98% full runs slowly, fails updates and quietly stops backing itself up — which is exactly the state it will be in when something goes wrong. Delete the video files you have already uploaded somewhere, offload the apps you have not opened since March, and leave yourself a few gigabytes of breathing room.
Then back up properly. iCloud or Google One running overnight on Wi-Fi covers most people and costs you one evening. If you would rather do it thoroughly, our guide on backing up before a repair works just as well as a pre-term checklist. Do it at home rather than after you move — first-week student Wi-Fi is famously optimistic.
A screen protector costs less than a screen repair
The cracked screens we see every September come from the same handful of places: a coat pocket on a night out, a bike handlebar mount on Oxford Road, and a bedside table with a hard floor next to it. A decent tempered-glass protector and a case with a raised lip around the screen will not stop everything, but they turn a lot of would-be repairs into a shrug and a peeled-off protector.
If it does go, it is usually less painful than people brace for. iPhone screen repair in Manchester starts at £49, and we quote before we touch anything, so there are no surprises. Full pricing is on our prices page, and anything unusual gets a free quote first.
Buying second-hand for term? Check these first
Cheap used phones and laptops flood local listings in August, and plenty of them are genuinely good buys. Before you hand over any cash, do four things in person: look at the battery health screen yourself, confirm Find My iPhone or the Google account has been signed out, test the charging port with your own cable, and ask outright whether the handset is locked to a network. If the seller will not let you check, that is your answer.
If you have already bought something that turns out to be network locked, it is usually sortable — unlocking is one of the services we offer, and it costs a fraction of what the phone did. Same goes for a laptop that boots but crawls; a free diagnosis will tell you whether it is worth repairing rather than replacing.
When something breaks mid-term
You will not have a spare afternoon to go hunting for a repair shop, and you probably will not have a car either. That is precisely why the service is built around free collection and delivery: message us, we pick up from your halls, house share or campus building anywhere in Greater Manchester, fix it — usually the same day — and bring it straight back. No fix, no fee, and a 12-month warranty on the work.
Gaming setups count too. If the console that has been in a box all summer comes out in September with no picture on screen, an HDMI port repair is £70. A fan clean and thermal paste service, well worth doing on anything that has spent a couple of years under a bed collecting dust, is £80.
Sort it before term, not during it
