Term starts in a few weeks and your phone and laptop are about to work harder than they have all year — lecture recordings, group chats, late-night essays and a commute that eats battery. Half an hour of prep before you arrive in Manchester saves the week-three panic. Here is what is actually worth doing.

Check your battery health before you pack

Batteries rarely die suddenly. They fade quietly for months, then fail on the worst possible day. Delete the video files you have already uploaded somewhere, offload the apps you have not opened since March, and leave yourself a few gigabytes of breathing room.

Then back up properly. iCloud or Google One running overnight on Wi-Fi covers most people and costs you one evening. A screen protector costs less than a screen repair

The cracked screens we see every September come from the same handful of places: a coat pocket on a night out, a bike handlebar mount on Oxford Road, and a bedside table with a hard floor next to it. A decent tempered-glass protector and a case with a raised lip around the screen will not stop everything, but they turn a lot of would-be repairs into a shrug and a peeled-off protector.
